Permitting Specialist / Historic Preservation Assistant

A well-established general contractor has an opening for permitting specialists to assist in historic renovations and repair projects. This is a career position with an office overlooking downtown Charleston and off-street private parking.

Starting pay: Based on experience, most likely more than your previous position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct preliminary research on Charleston properties, including: Historical archives, Property records, and Previous permits

  • Prepare accurate and complete permit applications.

  • Collaborate closely with local preservation offices and regulatory bodies, including: City of Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review (BAR), and Preservation offices

  • Ensure compliance with historic preservation guidelines.

  • Support the preservation of Charleston’s architectural and cultural integrity by: Facilitating accurate documentation, assisting with design review submissions, and maintaining consistent communication with city and preservation officials throughout the permitting and renovation process.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Preferred background or education in: Construction, planning, and historic preservation

  • Familiarity with Charleston’s local permitting processes and zoning ordinances is highly valued

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Experience with research and document preparation is a plus
